Constructing the vortex indicator from OHLC bars
This archive note rebuilds the vortex pair from each bar high, each bar low, and the prior close. In editorial terms, a later plus-minus cross is then a constructed hypothesis about that recipe, not a finished signal.
- Plus vortex movement is the absolute distance from the current bar high to the previous bar low; minus vortex movement is the absolute distance from the current bar low to the previous bar high.
- True range is the largest of the current high-low span and the two absolute gaps from the prior close to the current high and the current low.
- Each finished line is one movement series summed over the lookback length and then divided by the lookback sum of true range, using a single integer window with a documented default of 13 periods.
- The plus and minus series are drawn as two separate solid lines in a new pane, and the same construction is shown on a one-hour euro-dollar candlestick chart.
Rebuild the pair from the bar
This TradersWeek editorial note keeps the vortex pair visible as a bar-by-bar recipe. The inputs are the current high, the current low, and the prior close. The output is two finished lines, not a ready-made trade.
Two distances before any summing
Plus vortex movement is the absolute distance from the current bar high to the previous bar low, taken before any lookback summing. Minus vortex movement is the absolute distance from the current bar low to the previous bar high, also taken before any lookback summing. Those two distances are the only movement inputs on each bar.
True range as the shared scale
True range is the largest of the current high-low span and the two absolute gaps between the prior close and the current high or low. It is formed on the same bar as the two movement distances and later summed over the same window.
One lookback and two ratios
The plus vortex line is the lookback sum of plus vortex movement divided by the lookback sum of true range. The minus vortex line is the lookback sum of minus vortex movement divided by the lookback sum of true range. Lookback length is the single integer window over which both movement series and true range are summed before the two ratios are formed. The construction uses that one integer lookback, with a documented default of 13 periods.
How the pair is drawn
The finished plus and minus series are drawn as two separate solid lines in a new pane rather than on the price scale. The same construction is shown on a one-hour euro-dollar candlestick chart.
