Dual detrended oscillators and dual Bollinger Band channels

A shorter and a longer detrended price oscillator time directional shifts against zero, while dual one- and three-deviation bands place price in lower, middle, or upper channels that describe movement strength.

A timing pair and a three-zone map

The combination uses two detrended price oscillators to detect directional shifts and dual Bollinger Bands to locate price in lower, middle, or upper channels that describe movement strength.

That pairing is a dual-oscillator-band combination. The two detrended oscillators supply timing of direction. The two band sets supply location and strength.

The detrended price oscillator is a cycle-oriented oscillator that subtracts a displaced moving average from price so shorter swings can be read against a zero line. It is not treated here as a cycle forecast.

Bollinger Bands remain volatility envelopes around a moving average. In this workflow they are dual one-deviation and three-deviation channels that segment price into lower, middle, and upper zones, rather than a volatility-expansion study.

Two oscillators against the zero line

A nine-period detrended oscillator is presented as the earlier alert. A twenty-period detrended oscillator is presented as the broader swing gauge. Both are read against their zero lines.

A zero-line shift is an oscillator move through zero used as an early directional alert rather than as a completed trade signal.

On the illustrated daily Chevron chart, the shorter oscillator crossed zero upward in April and July 2013 and downward in early June and August 2013. Those shorter-oscillator crosses often came before the longer oscillator.

Two stated ways to build the oscillator

One stated calculation subtracts a simple moving average shifted n/2+1 periods from the close. Another subtracts an x-period average from price x/2+1 periods earlier, so a twenty-period reading uses an eleven-period displacement.

Inner and outer bands as three channels

The band construction keeps a twenty-period average but replaces the usual two-deviation envelope with inner one-deviation and outer three-deviation bands. The result is three distinct channel segments.

The transitional middle channel is the band of price between the inner one-deviation lines. It is treated as a zone that can reverse, drift, or continue.

A move from the lower channel into the middle channel is treated as a possible reversal toward the upper inner band or the upper channel. A drop from the middle channel into the lower channel is treated as weakness that can extend.

Channel transitions as timing cues

A channel transition is price leaving one dual-band zone and entering another, often near a shorter-oscillator zero-line cross.

Shorter-oscillator zero-line crosses are described as often coinciding with price leaving one dual-band channel and entering another. The setup uses that coincidence as a timing cue rather than as a standalone entry rule.

The same oscillator-and-band combination is presented as applicable on weekly, daily, or intraday charts. It is also presented as usable when a stock and its sector exchange-traded fund leave the lower channel together.

The commodity channel index is a channel-style oscillator previously used in related channel strategies. It is retained in this combination family as an earlier channel tool, not as a replacement for the dual-band overlay.
