Evaluating engulfing momentum across hold windows

A two-bar engulfing reversal can be written as a momentum procedure with a locked pattern, a locked prior-trend lookback, and a one-to-five-day hold grid. Read market-group and long/short splits next, then ask whether a later Relative Strength Index overlay has a baseline worth beating.

  • The procedure enters at the close of a completed two-bar engulfing bar and holds for a fixed one through five days, run in parallel on currency pairs, commodity-tracking funds, index-tracking funds, and individual stocks.
  • Prior trend is a three-bar versus ten-bar extreme test plus a 3% range condition, so long and short setups are generated by rule rather than by informal chart reading.
  • The hold length highlighted as the group-level peak is not the same for currencies, commodity funds, index funds, and stocks, so the design does not support one shared swing exit.
  • Pooled long events and pooled short events do not share the same hold-length profile, and currency events are about 60% of the pooled pattern count.

Write the reversal as a procedure

The procedure can be stated as an entry at the close of a completed two-bar engulfing bar and a fixed hold of one through five days, then run in parallel on currency pairs, commodity-tracking funds, index-tracking funds, and individual stocks.

The historical window used daily observations covering 11 years for currencies, and the same span or history since listing for funds and stocks, rather than a single-market anecdote.

Editorial reading: lock the pattern, the lookback that defines prior trend, and the one-to-five-day hold grid first. Market-group splits and any later overlay come after that written procedure is fixed.

What counts as an engulfing bar

A bearish engulfing bar is a down-close body that covers the prior up-close body with a low below the prior low. A bullish bar is the opposite body coverage with a high above the prior high.

Prior trend by rule

Prior trend is a three-bar versus ten-bar extreme test plus a 3% range condition, which lets long and short setups be generated by rule instead of by informal chart reading.

Editorial reading: that lookback belongs in the written momentum strategy. It is not a visual judgment left to the chart.

Hold windows by market group

Long and short events are scored separately, then combined as weighted averages, for each market group and each hold length from one through five days.

The hold length highlighted as the group-level peak is not the same for currencies, commodity funds, index funds, and stocks, so the design does not support one shared swing exit.

Editorial reading: a single swing exit would ignore that the four groups do not share the same highlighted hold length.

Two signals before any overlay

Pooled long events and pooled short events do not share the same hold-length profile, so the procedure has to be scored as two signals rather than one blended reversal.

Editorial reading: after the pattern, the prior-trend lookback, the hold grid, and the long and short split are locked, it is fair to ask whether a later Relative Strength Index overlay has a baseline worth beating. That overlay is a second question. It is not a replacement for writing the engulfing reversal as a momentum strategy.
