Constructing volume-confirmation overlays on OHLC spreadsheet charts
Rebuild high-low-close bars in a spreadsheet pane, attach on-balance-volume as a marker or conditional trace, and keep volume-confirmation on the same scale. Editorial: if changing the volume test does not move the marks, the rule was never wired to price.
- Rebuild price into high-low-close segments and isolate each gapped-ohlc-block with a blank cell so the pane shows discrete bars and the full range, not only the close.
- Draw on-balance-volume against those bars so a change in the running volume total can flip a long or short overlay, with opposing markers on separate traces.
- Implement volume-confirmation as a conditional-price-trace on the same scale, so a price-based state appears only when volume agrees.

The pane as a construction bench
Columnar records can carry date, high, low, close, and volume together, and mixed text labels can ride with the numbers so the plotted sample remains identified.
A spreadsheet graphics pane can plot indicator output computed outside the sheet, so the workbook is used as a charting bench rather than the only calculation engine.
Editorial: treat that pane as a construction bench for a volume-price hypothesis. Rebuild the bar, attach the volume-derived state, and only then ask whether confirmation is visible on the same scale.
Rebuild the high-low-close bar
Price files can be reformatted into high-low-close segments so range extremes stay visible when stops are judged against the bar rather than the close alone.
A blank cell between successive high-low-close blocks, paired with a companion integer X column on an XY plot, draws discrete daily bars instead of one unbroken line. The isolated segment is a gapped-ohlc-block.
Volume-price-analysis reads the high-low-close bar together with volume so a break, stall, or reversal is judged by whether participation agrees with the range, not by the close alone.
Attach a volume-derived state
On-balance-volume is a running volume total that rises on up closes and falls on down closes, then is drawn against price so a change in the cumulative state can flip a long or short overlay.
Long and short states can be split across two marker traces so opposing arrow symbols do not occupy the same point.
Linear rescaling from a series own high and low into a chosen target range preserves relative shape, so a price path and an oscillator or differently scaled market can occupy one pane. That mapping is range-normalization.
Make confirmation a visible overlay
Volume-confirmation is a filter that allows a price-based state only when volume agrees, implemented as a conditional trace on the bar rather than a later order-ticket check.
A companion price column that keeps the price only while a derived series is above its average, and stores an undrawn error otherwise, appears only on the qualifying bars. That companion column is a conditional-price-trace.
A reserved XY series drawn as neither line nor symbol can place labels at chosen coordinates, including a second numeric scale along the right edge.
Treat a one-sample rule as unfinished
The same worksheet can ingest many vehicles and windows, because a rule that only fits one sample is treated as unfinished construction.
