Stockpiling simple ideas for mechanical system construction

Simple concepts rather than one market explanation
A practical construction path is to gather many simple, testable concepts rather than encode one comprehensive market explanation. Large explanatory models tend to produce overly complicated rules and raise overfitting risk.
Overfitting risk is the tendency of large, theory-heavy models to produce complicated rules that fit history rather than a durable procedure. An idea stockpile is a maintained inventory of simple, untested trading concepts large enough that strategy construction does not stall.
Costs, later data, and controlled variants
After commissions and slippage are included, most candidate ideas are not strong enough to remain viable procedures. An execution-cost filter includes those costs when deciding whether a backtested idea remains a viable procedure. Prior belief about an idea should not replace objective backtesting of the full entry, exit, and abstention procedure.
A previously published idea can be retested from its original date through later data. That walk-forward analysis asks whether the same specified rules still produce usable signals after the original period.
The same idea can be examined on other markets or after conservative modifications. System optimization is that controlled variation across markets, bar sizes or types, and conservative rule modifications so the same procedure can be measured under different constraints. Each market and bar-size or bar-type combination expands the optimization and test load.
A larger inventory for a diversified set
A conservative count of three testable ideas per issue across 36 years of archives exceeds one thousand candidates before market and bar-size variants are added. Most ideas fail scrutiny. Only a minority survive as finished systems, so a larger idea inventory is the practical route to holding several diversified mechanical procedures.
