Constructing net positive volume as On-balance volume
Each period's full volume is signed by the close-to-close change and accumulated as a running total. The archive presents that series as On-balance volume and reads its direction or pattern as a check on price structure.
- Net Positive Volume adds, subtracts, or zeros each period's full volume according to whether the close rose, fell, or was unchanged versus the prior close.
- The archive presents that signed-volume running total as identical to On-balance volume.
- The raw level is treated as unimportant; interpretation is directed at the direction or pattern of the series.
- A rising series during a bullish pattern or uptrend is treated as confirmation; a falling series or Price-indicator divergence in an uptrend is treated as a warning.
How the running total is built
Net Positive Volume is constructed as a running total that adds, subtracts, or zeros the period's full volume according to whether the close rose, fell, or was unchanged versus the prior close.
The construction is defined by the recurrence NPVt = NPVt-1 + Vt × SGN[Pt − Pt-1], where SGN takes the values −1, 0, or +1.
The same signed-volume running total is presented as identical to On-balance volume.
Reading direction and pattern
The raw NPV level is treated as unimportant. Interpretation is directed at the direction or pattern of the series.
NPV is used to evaluate the strength of price-pattern signals, in the manner of an oscillator.
Confirmation versus warning
A rising NPV during a bullish price pattern or uptrend is treated as confirmation of that trend.
A falling NPV, or a Price-indicator divergence versus price, during an uptrend is treated as a warning not to be overly bullish at that point.
