Construct a market-state-first range-breakout system as one procedure
After a long, light-volume advance, the construction problem is a system that can leave on time, not only a new entry. Label market state first, arm an opening-range or prior-day range signal only when that state matches, and write the exit and sit-out branch before any order can fire.

Leave on time is the construction problem

The holding period is the planned window a position may remain open under the exit and abort rules, so that window has to be written before a signal is allowed to fire.
Label market state before any technique
A technique is not to be applied until market structure is known. Market state is a pre-trade label for whether price is volatile, trending, range-bound, strongly one-way, or drifting with little momentum, and it is an input before any technique is applied.
Identifying a trading range versus a trend is treated as the gate that decides which entry technique is appropriate. A range-breakout or prior-day range rule is not armed in every state.
Arm a range signal only when the state matches
A rule-based entry is fully specified in advance from market-state and execution conditions so the same if-then path can be tested instead of chosen trade by trade.
An opening-range breakout treats a break of the session’s initial range as an entry. It is fired only after rule inputs, market state, and execution constraints are checked, then held under the system’s planned exit window.
A prior-day trading-range entry uses the previous session’s high-low span as today’s reference box for entry, exit, or no-trade, subject to the same state and execution checks as the rest of the procedure.
Specify exit and abstention in the same procedure
Once structure is known, knowing when to exit is presented as the next required design step, so holding-period rules belong in the same procedure as the entry.
A selloff is framed as a reason to close longs and then either reverse or wait to re-enter. Abstention is the designed no-trade branch used when structure or filters do not match, written as part of the same procedure as entry and exit rather than left as an omission.
A 2 percent decline is cited as enough to change how the tape is read and therefore when an exit or sit-out rule should be re-evaluated. Selloff signs on major-index charts are dated as early as April 2010, ahead of the May 6, 2010 crash, to argue that exit rules should not wait for one violent session.
Name execution constraints so the path can be tested
Easier market access is said to multiply order types, front-end software, and complete trading systems, so those execution constraints must be specified with any rule-based entry. Execution constraints are the order types and front-end software limits that must be named with the signal so the procedure can actually be run.

Backtesting means replaying the full entry, exit, and sit-out path on historical data to check whether the rules are specified tightly enough to test.
