Route orders across competing exchange venues

Overlapping listings mean a trader must know every execution-venue that can match an instrument, then use order-routing only when the broker can send the order to the chosen destination.

Know every place the instrument can trade

Overlapping listings across a growing set of venues mean a trader must know every place a given instrument can actually trade. Equivalent-listings are instruments that serve the same trading purpose but trade on different venues.

An exchange need not be a national or physical marketplace. Matching can occur at a remote facility. Venues differentiate on product mix, volume, speed, pricing, and investor-protections rather than geography.

Send the order to a chosen venue

A trader can direct an order to a preferred exchange instead of remaining locked to a single default venue. Order-routing means sending an order to a chosen matching venue instead of accepting a default destination.

Broader venue choice has been reducing transaction costs and ending exclusive exchange franchises. Implementation-cost is the all-in cost of obtaining a fill, including venue pricing, spread, and related trading frictions.

Comparing equivalent-listings across several exchanges is useful only if the broker can route the order to the chosen destination. An execution-venue is the exchange or marketplace that can receive, match, and document the order.

Use the venue record when a fill is disputed

Extensive trade-documentation at a venue supports faster dispute resolution by reconstructing what occurred. Trade-documentation is the venue record of events used to reconstruct a trade and resolve disputes. Investor-protections are venue rules and safeguards that affect how fills and disputes are handled.
