US Large-Company Bankruptcies Hit 16-Year High in First Half of 2026

The US recorded 372 large-company bankruptcies in the first six months of 2026, the highest first-half total in 16 years and surpassing the full-year total for 2022. Industrial firms led with 50 filings.

The US saw 372 large-company bankruptcies in the first half of 2026, the most for that period in 16 years, according to data cited by The Kobeissi Letter. This marks the fourth consecutive year-over-year increase for the January-to-June period.

Both May and June recorded 72 filings each, the third-highest monthly total since July 2020. The six-month tally already exceeds the full-year 2022 count of 317 bankruptcies.

By sector, industrial companies led with 50 filings year-to-date, followed by consumer discretionary with 35 and healthcare with 26. The data indicates an accelerating pace of corporate bankruptcies.
