Japan July Current Account Surplus Beats Estimates at ¥2.99 Trillion

Japan's July current account surplus came in at ¥2,988.9 billion, above the ¥2,849.5 billion estimate, while the BOP-based trade balance showed a ¥399.9 billion deficit.

Japan's unadjusted current account surplus reached ¥2,988.9 billion in July, exceeding the consensus estimate of ¥2,849.5 billion by about ¥139 billion. The adjusted current account surplus printed at ¥2,523.1 billion.

On a balance of payments basis, the trade balance remained in deficit at ¥399.9 billion for the month, indicating that goods trade continued to weigh on the external accounts.

The headline reading therefore showed a stronger surplus than expected, even though the trade component was negative. The adjusted figure also remained solidly in positive territory, suggesting Japan's overall external position stayed resilient in July.
