Trump Announces Tariff Timeline on Imported Generic Drugs

President Trump proposed a phased tariff plan on imported generic drugs, starting with zero tariffs until August 2028, then rising to 100% and 200%, aimed at bringing production back to the U.S.

President Trump outlined a new tariff policy on imported generic drugs via Truth Social. Effective August 1, 2026, all imported generic drugs will face zero tariffs for two years. After that, tariffs will increase to 100% for one year, and then to 200% for any period beyond. The stated goal is to incentivize companies to build manufacturing facilities in the United States within the given timeframe.

The policy applies only to generic drugs; tariffs on patented, branded, and innovative drugs will remain unchanged. Companies that fail to establish U.S. production capacity by the deadline will face the escalating penalties. The plan is part of a broader push to reshore pharmaceutical manufacturing to America.
