Rubio Warns Iranian Control of Hormuz Would Have Global Repercussions

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Southeast Asian foreign ministers that Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz could set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences beyond the Middle East.

USOIL

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to Southeast Asian foreign ministers in Wednesday’s Asian session, cautioned that Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz would trigger repercussions extending well beyond the Middle East. The strait is a critical chokepoint for nearly 20% of global energy supplies.

While Rubio did not specify any immediate policy actions, his remarks underscore ongoing geopolitical risks around one of the world’s most vital maritime passages. Any disruption to Hormuz traffic could sharply affect global crude oil flows and energy prices.

The comments add to elevated tensions in the region and highlight the fragile balance of oil supply routes. Traders will be watching for any escalation that might tighten supply fundamentals.
