Chinese AI Models Capture Record 58% Token Share on OpenRouter
Chinese AI models now account for ~58% of tokens used by US firms on OpenRouter, tripling since mid-January and overtaking US models for the first time in March.
According to data from OpenRouter, a platform that aggregates AI models from multiple providers, Chinese AI models have surged to a record ~58% share of tokens consumed by US firms. This marks a dramatic shift from early 2025, when Chinese models held less than 10% and US models represented ~80%.
The percentage has tripled since mid-January and first surpassed US peers on the platform in March. In the first week of July, Chinese models briefly reached 63%.
DeepSeek has emerged as the most popular choice among US firms in recent months, driving the rapid adoption.
