Building TRIX crossover and momentum entries on a period grid

Two entry procedures share TRIX, a triple-smoothed oscillator of ordered price. One crosses the oscillator against a three-period exponential average. The other is written on the oscillator's one-bar change. Both treat TRIX length as a searched parameter from 5 through 21 in steps of 4.

  • The basic TRIX procedure enters long when the prior oscillator reading is below its three-period exponential average and the current reading is at or above that average, and it enters short when the prior reading is above that average and the current reading is at or below it.
  • A second procedure is defined on the one-bar change in TRIX rather than on the TRIX level.
  • That momentum procedure enters long only when the one-bar TRIX change is negative and also lies above its three-period simple average, and it enters short only when the change is positive and also lies below that average.
  • Both procedures treat TRIX length as a searched parameter running from 5 through 21 in steps of 4, and the momentum rules must carry that searched length in every term.

A shared oscillator and two entry procedures

This archive article constructs TRIX, a triple-smoothed oscillator of ordered price, as the shared series for two entry procedures.

The basic procedure is a long or short signal written as paired current-bar and prior-bar tests so the procedure can fire, reverse, or stand aside.

Oscillator lookback is handled as a discrete search over candidate lengths instead of locking a single period into the rules.

Level crossover against a short exponential average

The basic TRIX procedure enters long when the prior oscillator reading is below its three-period exponential average and the current reading is at or above that average.

The same procedure enters short when the prior oscillator reading is above that three-period exponential average and the current reading is at or below it.

Momentum on the first difference

A second procedure is defined on the first difference, the one-bar change in TRIX, rather than on the TRIX level.

That momentum procedure enters long only when the one-bar TRIX change is negative and also lies above its three-period simple average.

It enters short only when the one-bar TRIX change is positive and also lies below its three-period simple average.

Lookback as a search grid

Both procedures treat TRIX length as a searched parameter running from 5 through 21 in steps of 4.

The momentum procedure is presented as more involved because the searched TRIX length must appear in every term of the rule definitions.
