US Margin Debt Posts Record $85 Billion Monthly Plunge in July
US margin debt fell $85 billion in July to $1.42 trillion, the largest one-month drop on record and the first monthly decline since March.
Margin debt contracted by $85 billion in July, bringing the total to $1.42 trillion. That is the largest monthly decline on record and the first decrease since March.
The drop follows a $198 billion surge over May and June, which was the largest two-month increase on record. For context, the next-largest monthly drop was an $80 billion decline in January 2022, just as that year's bear market began.
Despite the pullback, margin debt remains up $518 billion, or 58%, since the beginning of 2025. The data suggests leveraged investors faced heavy pressure last month.
