Japan Economy Minister: Conditions Not Met to Declare End of Deflation

Economy Minister Kiuchi says the government will weigh CPI, the GDP deflator and underlying inflation trends before any official end to deflation, and he currently does not see the conditions as met.

Japan’s Economy Minister Kiuchi said any government decision on whether to declare an official end to deflation will be based on a comprehensive review of consumer prices, the GDP deflator and the factors behind underlying inflation moves.

He added that, in his view, the conditions for making such a declaration have not yet been met.

The remarks suggest Tokyo remains cautious about formally closing the book on deflation even as price indicators have shifted.
