Japan FX Intervention Labeled a 'Con Game' as BoJ Holds Off Rate Hike

Major commentators criticize Japan's currency intervention as a 'con game', noting that BoJ Governor Ueda expressed inflation fears but gave no hint of a rate hike.

Several prominent market voices have labeled Japan’s recent currency intervention a “con game,” contrasting the BoJ’s dovish stance with its inflation rhetoric.

At last week’s policy meeting, Governor Ueda acknowledged rising inflation pressures, but refrained from signaling any imminent rate hike or providing forward guidance on tightening.

The lack of a hawkish pivot, despite the intervention to support the yen, has drawn sharp criticism from some analysts who see the move as contradictory and unlikely to sustainably strengthen the currency.
