HSBC: Yen Intervention Hindered by Persistent Rate Gap

HSBC Asset Management notes that coordinated intervention to support the yen is challenged by the wide interest rate differential, recalling past carry-trade unwinds.

USDJPY

HSBC Asset Management has assessed the recent coordinated action by Japanese and US authorities aimed at supporting the Japanese yen. The intervention, though significant, faces headwinds from the persistent gap between Japanese and US interest rates. This gap encourages carry trades, where investors borrow in yen to invest in higher-yielding assets, putting downward pressure on the currency.

HSBC recalled the sharp unwinding of such carry trades during the previous intervention episode roughly two years ago, highlighting the risk of sudden reversals. The note underscores the challenge for policymakers trying to stabilise the yen amid divergent monetary policies.
