Commerzbank: SARB Rate Hold to Weaken Rand Despite Resilience
Commerzbank warns that South Africa’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged in July could undermine the rand, even as the currency has held up reasonably well against geopolitical headwinds.
Commerzbank analyst Volkmar Baur flagged a risk to the South African rand (ZAR) after the central bank’s decision to leave its key rate on hold in July. The call came despite the currency’s relatively stable performance during the Iran conflict, which had tested emerging-market assets.
Baur suggests that the rate pause, in an environment where other central banks may be easing or where rate differentials shift, could turn into a headwind. The unchanged policy stance might erode the carry appeal that previously supported the rand.
South Africa’s monetary authorities faced slowing inflation but opted to stay pat, a move now seen as potentially punitive for the currency if global risk appetite sours further.
