Australian Beef Hit With 55% China Tariff After Quota Filled

China's safeguard quota for Australian beef imports has been fully utilized, triggering an additional 55% tariff on shipments entering China through the remainder of 2026.

China's safeguard quota for Australian beef imports has been exhausted, activating a 55% import tariff on all Australian beef shipments entering the country from this weekend through the end of 2026.

The quota was set at 205,000 tonnes, a level significantly below Australia's 2025 export volume to China, according to the report.

  • The tariff applies immediately to beef shipments entering China after the quota was filled.
  • The measure is likely to impact Australian beef exporters heavily, as China is a major market for Australian beef.
