Place a yuan devaluation inside peg, contract, and funding context
A mid-2015 yuan policy shift preceded an August 24, 2015 session in which US equity futures were limit-down before the cash open and the New Zealand dollar printed its most aggressive move in 30 years. The teaching task is to translate multiyear cash flows, map peg-defense events with funding stress, and bound exposure before a devaluation is treated as a standalone trade.
- A peg change can show up in equity futures, another currency, and disappearing liquidity in the same session, so the first reading is the cross-market regime.
- Currency translation revalues multiyear receipts when the billing currency or its peg moves against the reporting currency, even when the counterparty still pays.
- Event-driven context joins the yuan, reserve drain, a prior baht defense, the end of a Swiss euro floor, and a spike in offshore-yuan rollover into one peg-defense map.
- Scenario risk analysis bounds loss and carry before entry by asking what happens if the peg is defended, abandoned, or attacked, including a rollover cost that can break a borrowed-currency short.
A policy shift arrived as a multi-market session
A mid-2015 yuan policy shift preceded an August 24, 2015 session in which US equity futures were limit-down before the cash open. In the same session the New Zealand dollar printed its most aggressive move in 30 years as liquidity disappeared.
Editorial: read that session as contagion in the archive sense, a rapid shift from assuming risk is scarce to treating risk as widespread, often after a peg or reserve defense fails. The pairing is the start of a regime reading, not a reason to isolate the yuan as a standalone trade.
Revalue the cash flows the peg was hiding
Currency translation means revaluing multiyear contract cash flows when the billing currency or its peg moves against the reporting currency. When a seller is paid a fixed amount of a foreign currency over several years, a sharp drop in that currency reduces the economic value of already-agreed receipts even if the counterparty does not default.
Over the year shown in the 2015-2016 dollar-index path, a roughly 20% rise in the US dollar increased the reporting-currency value of multiyear contracts billed in dollars. That included contracts linked to a yuan that had been tied to the dollar.
China's stated move away from a dollar peg toward a basket was presented as reducing the chance of sharp day-to-day swings. Existing dollar-linked contracts still remained exposed to a weaker yuan.
Map peg defense, reserves, and rollover together
Event-driven context uses a discrete policy or peg-defense episode to reframe how correlated assets and funding rates should be read together. A peg is a policy commitment that keeps one currency stable versus another currency or a basket.
A chart pairing the yuan priced in dollars with falling Chinese foreign-exchange reserves was used to recall the 1997 Thai baht defense. In that earlier episode, reserve spending delayed but did not prevent peg abandonment and a multiyear economic setback.
When the Swiss National Bank ended its euro floor, bank desks reported losses above $100 million. Some foreign-exchange brokers failed or needed recapitalization after selling a currency no official balance sheet could keep pegged.
In mid-January the Hong Kong interbank overnight rate that sets offshore-yuan rollover reached 66.8%, about five times its prior high. Rollover is the short-term funding cost of holding a borrowed-currency short, here driven by overnight interbank rates. That spike made short-term borrowed-yuan shorts expensive to hold even if the directional view was intact.
The archive treats capital leaving China, not the presence of short sellers, as the primary pressure on the currency. Official support was aimed at breaking a cycle in which a weaker yuan encourages still-faster outflows.
Bound exposure before the devaluation is a trade
Scenario risk analysis bounds loss and carry before entry by asking what happens if a peg is defended, abandoned, or attacked.
Editorial: if the peg is defended, overnight rollover can jump the way the Hong Kong interbank rate did, so a borrowed-yuan short can become expensive to hold while the directional view is still intact. If the peg is abandoned, the end of the Swiss euro floor shows that desks can book large losses and that some brokers can fail or need recapitalization when no official balance sheet will hold the price. If reserves are spent to delay a break, the Thai baht defense shows that time bought with reserves is not the same as a peg that will hold.
Editorial: the archive pressure reading also changes the scenario set. If outflows, not short sellers, are the primary force, official support is an attempt to stop a self-reinforcing cycle rather than a verdict on speculative positioning.
