Yen Weakens as BoJ Holds Key Rate at 1%

The Japanese yen lost ground on Friday after the Bank of Japan left its short-term interest rate unchanged at 1%, lifting USD/JPY back toward 160.80.

USDJPY

The Bank of Japan kept its short-term interest rate unchanged at 1% during its meeting on Friday, prompting a fresh sell-off in the Japanese yen. USD/JPY rose to around 160.80 in Asian trading, snapping two days of declines.

The yen had clawed back some ground earlier in the week. However, the BoJ’s decision to hold rates steady maintained the wide yield differential with other major economies, renewing pressure on the currency.

The pair continues to appreciate as markets digest the policy announcement, with investors watching for any further signals from BoJ officials.
