US Tech Giants Urge White House Not to Restrict Open-Weight AI Models

Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta and 25 other firms signed a letter warning that limiting open-weight models would undermine U.S. leadership and favor a few closed developers.

A coalition of 26 U.S. companies — including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Andreessen Horowitz, Hugging Face, IBM, and Dell — published an open letter titled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership,” urging the government not to impose restrictions on open-weight AI models.

The signatories argue that banning such models would not strengthen U.S. dominance but instead shift the market toward a handful of closed developers. They draw a parallel with the open-source software movement of the 1980s, emphasizing how open innovation drives progress.

The letter also explicitly defends model distillation as a legitimate practice. It calls for any disputes to be resolved through narrowly tailored legal and commercial frameworks rather than through broad prohibitions.
