Tokenisation: What It Actually Means for Australian Investors

Australian exchange BTC Markets has notified ASIC of plans to apply for a markets licence covering spot crypto and tokenised assets.

Australian digital-asset exchange BTC Markets has notified the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) of its intention to apply for a markets licence to offer regulated spot cryptocurrencies and tokenised assets. The company said the licence would allow it to offer tokenised equities, bonds and real-world assets alongside cryptocurrencies, giving Australian investors access to markets that operate around the clock with instant settlement.

BTC Markets points to growing institutional adoption of tokenisation as evidence that the technology is moving from proof-of-concept to infrastructure. It cites BlackRock's BUIDL tokenised treasury fund, which has reached US$1.7 billion in two years, and J.P. Morgan's tokenised platform, which processes more than US$2 billion daily. The Bank for International Settlements is running Project Agora, a tokenised payments pilot involving seven central banks and 43 financial institutions, while the New York Stock Exchange has announced plans for 24/7 trading of tokenised securities.

The exchange argues that tokenisation is the next step in the evolution of ownership. Physical share certificates were replaced by electronic records, but investors still rely on intermediaries and have limited visibility into where their assets sit. A tokenised asset behaves like a digital share certificate, offering direct ownership, blockchain transparency and faster transfers.

According to BTC Markets, the benefits for investors include instant settlement, lower costs as intermediaries are removed, and cross-border transfers that take minutes rather than weeks. The company says investors would not need to understand the underlying technology, only the outcomes: faster, cheaper and more accessible investing.

Australia, it says, is well positioned to embrace the transition thanks to respected regulatory frameworks, a deep superannuation sector seeking new asset classes, and a financial services industry that can move quickly. "We're big enough to matter, but small enough to move fast," the company said, arguing Australia can act more nimbly than larger jurisdictions with fragmented regulators.

BTC Markets, which has operated for 13 years and served hundreds of thousands of customers, said it was committed to working with regulators and following their process. The company described the licence not as the goal but as a foundation for a venue where cryptocurrencies and tokenised real-world assets trade with the same investor protections Australians expect, but with 24/7 access and broader participation.
