Streamlining Access: Bitfinex Launches Google Single Sign-On (SSO)

Bitfinex has announced the integration of Google Single Sign-On (SSO), enabling all customers globally to sign up and log in using their existing Google credentials. The update is designed to simplify authentication while maintaining the exchange's security-first architecture for digital asset trading.

The introduction of Google SSO reduces reliance on manual password entry, which can be a vector for phishing and credential harvesting. According to Bitfinex, the integration provides proactive threat detection through Google's algorithms, centralized identity management for corporate teams, and a reduced phishing surface. Traders can also benefit from seamless cross-device continuity between the Bitfinex web platform and mobile app.

Bitfinex emphasises that Google SSO serves as an access layer, not a replacement for its existing security suite. The exchange continues to recommend pairing SSO with Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) hardware keys, IP whitelisting, and granular API permissions for professional accounts.

How It Works

Users can sign up by visiting the Bitfinex sign-up page, selecting "Continue with Google," and following the prompts. No password is required during sign-up, but users may later set a password as a fallback. Existing accounts can link a Google account via Account Settings, subject to a five-day hold. Login requires completing Bitfinex's standard two-factor authentication (2FA) even if Google account 2FA is enabled.

The system shares limited information with Google: name, profile picture, email address, and confirmation that the user is a Bitfinex customer. If a user loses access to their Google account but retains email access, they can use standard email recovery. If both are lost, Bitfinex customer support can assist with account recovery.

Unlinking a Google account is possible—provided a password fallback is set—via Account Settings and 2FA confirmation. After unlinking, the user is logged out and can log in again with email and password.
