Japan’s Mimura Says Joint Intervention May Be Peak of US-Japan FX Partnership
Japan's top currency official Atsushi Mimura suggested that any coordinated exchange-rate intervention with the US could represent the high-water mark of bilateral currency cooperation.
Atsushi Mimura, Japan’s Vice Finance Minister for International Affairs, told Reuters that joint market action would likely be the culmination of the US-Japan currency partnership. He characterized such an event as a potential peak rather than an ongoing tool.
Mimura’s remarks come as Japanese authorities continue to monitor speculative yen moves. The yen has faced persistent depreciation pressure, and officials have repeatedly warned they are prepared to act against excessive volatility.
The comment may dampen expectations of regular, coordinated intervention with the US and focuses attention on unilateral steps by Tokyo if the yen’s slide accelerates.
