Indonesian Rupiah Nears Two-Month High on Softer Dollar, BI Clarity
The Indonesian rupiah strengthened to near a two-month high as the US dollar weakened following disappointing payrolls data and Bank Indonesia’s leadership succession became clearer.
The Indonesian rupiah (IDR) climbed to levels not seen in nearly two months, supported by a softer US dollar and increased policy clarity at Bank Indonesia (BI).
Weak US employment data pushed the greenback lower, giving emerging market currencies a lift. At the same time, the nomination of Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for BI governor removed uncertainty over the central bank’s future leadership.
OCBC analysts Sim Moh Siong and Christopher Wong noted that these twin factors have bolstered sentiment towards the rupiah.
The combination of a dovish Fed outlook and domestic political stability may continue to favor the IDR in the near term.
