Google to Allow Removal of Visible AI Content Watermarks

Google plans to let users hide visible AI watermarks in Gemini and Flow, while retaining invisible SynthID and C2PA provenance data.

Google is adding an option to remove visible AI-generated watermarks from images, videos, and music created with artificial intelligence. The setting will appear in Gemini and the Flow video editor, and is expected to reach Search later.

Despite the change, the company said invisible SynthID marking and C2PA metadata will remain in place, so AI-generated content can still be identified. Google framed the move as a balance between creative freedom and transparency: visible labels can interfere with professional use, while hidden markings preserve traceability.

The company also introduced Credentio, a library for local verification of AI-content provenance.
