The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded just above 51,800 on Wednesday afternoon, down roughly 900 points and 1.7% from Tuesday's close. The index hit a session high just above 52,800 before 09:00 GMT, then sold off in a near-continuous decline.
Selling pressure persisted throughout the day as traders positioned ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision and accompanying guidance. The pullback erased most of the prior session's gains.
