Coinbase receives DCO approval from CFTC, completing full derivatives stack

The CFTC has approved Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization, giving the exchange a full set of regulated derivatives registrations alongside its FCM and DCM licenses.

Coinbase said on Monday that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved its application to register Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization (DCO). The approval completes the exchange's set of regulated derivatives infrastructure, which already includes a futures commission merchant (FCM) registration and a designated contract market (DCM) registration.

According to Coinbase, the new setup lets it create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly for the first time. The company framed the change as a route to faster product development, more efficient operations and greater flexibility in bringing new regulated products to market over time. Coinbase described the clearinghouse as USDC-native.

Scope of the licence

The CFTC's approval is limited in scope. Coinbase Clearing is permitted to clear only fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. It cannot clear leveraged products, which will continue to be handled by outside clearing partners. Coinbase said it will keep working with existing partners to support certain offerings, including its margined derivatives business and its planned launch of single stock perpetuals.

The expanded stack has prompted speculation that Coinbase could eventually support a restricted HIP-3 market on Hyperliquid, a structure similar to the one Kraken parent Payward announced earlier this month. Under that proposal, Bitnomial Exchange would list and clear new contracts for eligible U.S. clients, NinjaTrader Clearing would carry client accounts, and Hyperliquid's onchain order book would match orders.

Any such move by Coinbase remains speculative. Coinbase Clearing's licence is confined to fully funded contracts, and the company has not stated any intention to deploy a HIP-3 market. Payward's own proposal is still awaiting regulatory approval.
