BAE Systems Wins £5.9bn UK Contract for Dreadnought Nuclear Submarines

The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded BAE Systems a £5.9 billion ($7.8 billion) contract to continue development of the next-generation Dreadnought-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. The vessels are slated to replace the Royal Navy’s aging Vanguard-class fleet, which has maintained the country’s continuous at-sea deterrent since the 1990s. The first of the new class is expected to enter service in the early 2030s.

The award is part of an £8.4 billion defence funding package aimed at sustaining the UK’s independent nuclear deterrent. It underlines long-term government commitment to the submarine programme, which supports thousands of high-skilled jobs across the UK supply chain.
