AvaTrade Agrees to Acquire Majority of FXCM as Jefferies…

AvaTrade has agreed to acquire the majority of FXCM Group's business and brand, three days after Trade Nation struck a deal for the UK client book of Stratos Markets. Terms were not disclosed.

AvaTrade has agreed to acquire the majority of FXCM Group's business and brand, the broker announced on Friday, October 9, in a transaction that accelerates the break-up of one of retail forex trading's longest-running brokerage groups and reduces Jefferies Financial Group's exposure to the business it rescued more than a decade ago. Financial terms, the specific entities covered and a completion timetable were not disclosed.

The deal was announced three days after Trade Nation agreed to buy the UK client book of Stratos Markets Limited, the FCA-regulated company that runs FXCM and Tradu in Britain. That transfer is expected to complete in late November and is a client-book acquisition rather than a purchase of Stratos Markets itself, meaning the two transactions can coexist.

What AvaTrade is actually buying

That remains the central unanswered question. AvaTrade framed the deal as the acquisition of the "majority" of FXCM Group's business and brand, not all of Stratos Group, and did not identify which regulated subsidiaries, client books, technology assets or institutional operations — including the FXCM Pro division — will transfer. Investors and customers therefore still lack a full map of which FXCM assets end up with AvaTrade, with Trade Nation, or stay inside Jefferies.

Jefferies' involvement dates to January 2015, when the removal of the EUR/CHF floor left FXCM customers with roughly $275 million in negative balances and pushed the broker into a regulatory capital deficit. Leucadia National, later renamed Jefferies Financial Group, supplied a $300 million emergency loan that kept FXCM operating. In September 2023, Jefferies took 100% of Stratos through foreclosure after previously holding a 49.9% equity interest. Its latest quarterly filing allocates just $5.5 million of goodwill to Stratos and warns that weaker trading volumes or operating performance could lead to an impairment — an accounting component, not a valuation of FXCM's clients, licences or technology.

The sale also follows a reversal in Stratos' strategy for Tradu, the multi-asset platform launched as FXCM's sister brand. Earlier this year Tradu began moving leveraged trading back under FXCM, with CFD accounts migrating automatically while Tradu continued handling listed-stock investing, restoring FXCM as the group's primary leveraged-trading brand.

FXCM was founded in 1999 and remains a recognisable name in retail forex and CFDs despite years of restructuring. "By combining FXCM's established market presence with AvaTrade's technology and product innovation, we aim to expand our global reach and build a stronger, more diversified trading group," AvaTrade CEO Daire Ferguson said. AvaTrade has not said whether acquired clients will eventually move onto its platforms, whether FXCM will remain a separate brand in every jurisdiction, or how FXCM's existing platforms and institutional activities will be handled.
