Hybrid tape sweeps, pairs triggers, and fair-value cash-and-carry

Isolated scalping was described as no longer the primary focus after a listed-market hybrid transition, as efficiency rose and other short-horizon doors opened. Editorial reading: rebuild that same session around sweep detection, pairs-with-triggers, and fair-value cash-and-carry so each microstructure event maps to an entry, an exit, or a deliberate stand-aside.

  • Isolated scalping was described as no longer the primary focus after hybridization, because efficiency had risen and other short-horizon doors had opened.
  • Desk procedures treated a quote-line color change or a print-away-from-quote as a quote-line-trigger that a sweep or other significant tape action was underway.
  • Remaining activity was described as pairs-with-triggers rather than all-session discretionary scalping.
  • Cash-and-carry sold futures rich to the fair-value-basis while buying the cash basket, then reversed when futures traded at a discount-to-fair-value, waiting seconds to minutes and including transaction costs.

When isolated scalping no longer carries the book

After a listed-market hybrid transition, isolated scalping was described as no longer the primary focus because efficiency had risen and other short-horizon doors had opened.

Editorial reading: when isolated scalping stops carrying the book, the design problem is to rebuild the same session so a sweep, a pairs-with-triggers condition, or a fair-value-basis reading each maps to an entry, an exit, or a deliberate stand-aside.

Sweep detection as a mapped event

Some desk procedures used a quote-line color change as a quote-line-trigger that a sweep or other significant tape action was underway. Other procedures triggered when print prices appeared away from the national best bid and offer, a print-away-from-quote.

A nimble sweep-response program was described as looking for five-cent stock moves and then hitting the name on a sweep, or as relying on already-entered trigger points. A sweep is a rapid lift or hit of displayed liquidity that can move a name through several cents in one burst.

Editorial reading: those tape readings are order-flow-cues. They tell the session whether to hit the name, use a pre-entered trigger, or stand aside. They are not a standalone forecast.

Pairs-with-triggers instead of all-session scalping

Remaining activity after hybridization was described as pairs trading with pre-set triggers rather than all-session discretionary scalping.

Pairs-with-triggers means a paired inventory is adjusted only when a pre-set tape, quote, or sweep condition fires. The discretionary scalp through the whole session is no longer the primary focus. If the trigger does not fire, the pair is left alone.

Fair-value cash-and-carry as the basis event

Cash-and-carry index arbitrage was outlined as selling futures rich to calculated fair value while buying the cash index or stock basket, then reversing when futures later traded cheap to fair value.

Fair value was described as depending on interest rates, dividends not received on futures, time to expiration, and the lower carry cost of futures versus buying the cash stocks. That calculated level is the fair-value-basis against which a live premium-to-fair-value or discount-to-fair-value is measured.

A large premium-to-fair-value was treated as an immediate cue that arbitrage desks were selling futures and buying stock. A large discount-to-fair-value was treated as a cue that those desks would be selling stock.

The cash-and-carry reverse was described as waiting for a market turnaround that could last seconds to minutes, with transaction costs included in the accounting.

Assign each event an entry, an exit, or a stand-aside

Editorial reading: treat the large premium or discount as an order-flow-cue, not as a forecast of the next session. The rebuilt book can assign sweep detection to a hit, a pre-entered trigger, or a stand-aside; pairs-with-triggers to inventory adjustment only when a condition fires; and cash-and-carry to the basis reverse after costs are counted. Isolated scalping does not have to remain the primary focus once those short-horizon doors are open.
