Constructing pair-spreads as one testable instrument
A pair-spread is built before it is ruled. Lock share weights, choose a difference-series or a ratio-series, and measure the pair-average-trading-range first so later signals test one instrument.
- A pair-spread is a single working series from two names, charted and ruled as one instrument rather than as two separate markets.
- A share-ratio-hedge can start the legs near value-neutral, with an optional tilt, in either a difference-series or a ratio-series.
- Pair-average-trading-range sets entries, add-ons, exits, and how often the pair is worked.
- Construction-consistency keeps the formula, share weights, and range parameters fixed, including a spread-spike-pause after an unusually large move.
Build the pair-spread first
Pair or relative-performance analysis can be built as a pair-spread: a single working series made from two names so their joint move can be charted and ruled as one instrument.
That series can be a difference-series, by subtracting one price or a share-weighted price from the other, or a ratio-series, by dividing one price by the other. The two series often track closely but can diverge, and the ratio-series can accelerate opposite the difference-series.
Lock the share-ratio-hedge
Share counts can be set as a share-ratio-hedge so the long and short legs start near value-neutral, with an optional percentage tilt to one side.
A two-for-one share construction turned prices of 24 and 54 into a 6.00 working spread used as the traded series. A long stance in that constructed spread was framed as expecting a move from 6.00 toward 6.50. A later short stance expected the spread to contract toward a mean.
Measure the pair's own range
The pair-average-trading-range over a chosen window can set entries, add-ons, exits, and how frequently that pair is traded.
After a spike in the pair-spread, a spread-spike-pause reduced high-frequency mean-reversion work until the series settled, then the work resumed.
Some price-difference charts only support a one-to-one pairing, so the construction must match both the available chart and the range rules in use.
Keep construction-consistency
The construction choice is treated as a construction-consistency requirement rather than a claim that a ratio-series or a difference-series is universally superior. The same formula, share weights, and range parameters keep signals comparable from one period to the next.
