Plus500 Powers US Futures for Wealthsimple's 4M Clients

Plus500 will supply the trading infrastructure behind Wealthsimple's new US futures offering, serving more than four million Canadian clients and expanding its B2B push.

Plus500 has entered a strategic partnership with Canadian fintech Wealthsimple to give the platform's more than four million clients access to US futures markets. Under the agreement, Plus500 will provide the institutional technology behind the service, including clearing, order routing and risk management capabilities developed through its regulated US futures business.

The partnership marks another step in Plus500's shift from a retail CFD broker toward a business-to-business infrastructure provider. While retail investors will interact directly with Wealthsimple's platform, a significant portion of the underlying trading infrastructure will be supplied by Plus500, allowing Wealthsimple to expand into derivatives without building regulated trading operations in-house.

Wealthsimple oversees approximately C$150 billion in assets under administration, making it one of Canada's largest retail investment platforms. The new US futures offering broadens its product range beyond investing, savings and other financial services, and connects Canadian customers to one of the world's major derivatives markets.

Expanding B2B partnerships

The Wealthsimple deal follows a series of recent institutional agreements for Plus500. The company was previously named clearing partner for CME Group and FanDuel's event contracts platform, and also partnered with proprietary trading firm Topstep. Those agreements, combined with the Wealthsimple deal, position Plus500 as a provider of futures clearing and trading infrastructure for exchanges, consumer platforms and proprietary trading firms.

Plus500 said additional B2B partnerships are already in development, suggesting the institutional arm will continue to grow alongside its traditional retail operations. The company expects its pipeline of B2B opportunities to keep expanding, with future growth potentially tied as much to the number of financial platforms using its technology as to the number of traders on its own apps.

For Plus500, the Wealthsimple partnership also brings exposure to a large retail investor base without the direct cost of acquiring customers. Instead of competing solely for end users, the company is increasingly monetising the regulated infrastructure built for its own trading business, a model that reflects a broader trend across the brokerage industry as platforms seek partners for execution, clearing and risk management.
