Japan July Trade Deficit Beats Forecast at ¥634.5 Billion
Japan's July trade deficit came in at ¥634.5 billion, narrower than the ¥649 billion forecast but wider than the prior month's ¥406.9 billion, with both exports and imports growing more than expected.
Japan recorded a merchandise trade deficit of ¥634.5 billion in July. The result was narrower than the ¥649 billion shortfall markets had projected, but it was wider than the ¥406.9 billion deficit reported for June.
Exports rose 23.2% year-on-year, ahead of the 20.1% increase analysts expected. Imports climbed 27.8%, also above the 25.1% consensus, keeping the overall balance in deficit despite strong external demand.
The report highlights stronger-than-forecast trade flows in both directions. While export growth suggests solid global demand, faster import growth continues to weigh on Japan's net trade position.
