How to read the COT report

The report splits every open futures position into three groups. Large speculators, non-commercial traders in CFTC terms, are funds and trading advisers who hold futures for the price move. Commercial hedgers are producers, consumers and banks that use futures to fix a price for business they already have. Small traders are everyone below the reporting threshold.

The number that matters is the net position: longs minus shorts of a group. Speculators follow the trend, so their net long usually grows while a market rises. Hedgers sit on the other side almost by definition, because a producer sells forward what it will make. Their net short is a normal state, not a forecast.

Position in the three-year range

A net long of 50,000 contracts means little on its own: in one market it is a record, in another a quiet week. So the page also shows where the latest net position of speculators sits between its lowest and highest level of the last three years, from 0 to 100. Readings near either end mark crowded positioning, when a trend is most exposed to a sharp reversal. It describes the crowd, not the timing.

Why the data is three days old

The CFTC counts open positions as of Tuesday and publishes the count on Friday afternoon, US Eastern time. A US holiday moves the release by a day or two, and past weeks are sometimes revised. Each check rereads the last four weeks, so revised figures replace the old ones here as well.

When is the COT report released

Every Friday at 3:30 pm US Eastern time, with positions as of the Tuesday before. When a US federal holiday falls in the week, the release usually moves to the next business day.

Which version of the report is this

The legacy report for futures only. It has the longest history and the three classic groups most COT charts use. The CFTC also publishes versions that add options and split traders into finer groups, so figures elsewhere can differ from these for that reason alone.

Why are bitcoin and ether here

CME lists regulated bitcoin and ether futures, and the CFTC reports them like any other market. Funds that cannot hold coins directly trade these contracts, so the report shows how that money is positioned in crypto, which spot exchanges do not disclose.

Is this a trading signal

No. Positioning shows who holds what, not what the price will do next. Speculators can stay heavily long through a long rally, and an extreme reading can last for months. Use it as context next to price and your own plan.
