Evaluating trailing stops as two-parameter loss filters

Editorial reading: a Trailing stop is a two-parameter loss filter. First set the initial Stop-loss order so exposure is capped before entry, then choose how fast that cap may crawl toward price after a favorable excursion. A historical grid scored those pairs by result and by maximum drawdown referred to entry, not by whether the entry itself was skillful.

  • Editorial reading: fix the initial Stop-loss order first so exposure is capped before entry, then choose how fast a Trailing stop may crawl toward price after a favorable excursion.
  • In the tested design the Trailing stop began at that opening loss bound and tightened as it followed price, so the same tool was the money-management stop and the trail.
  • A four-day hold forced every trade out, so every stop-and-factor pair had the same trade count and differences came from stop placement.
  • Pairings were scored by result and by maximum drawdown referred to entry, treating the trail as a Drawdown limit control as well as an exit.

Two knobs on one loss filter

Editorial reading: treat a Trailing stop as a two-parameter loss filter. First fix the initial Stop-loss order so exposure is capped before entry. Then choose how fast that cap may crawl toward price after a favorable excursion.

Score the pair by how it changes drawdown rather than by whether the entry itself was skillful. The archive facts below describe a historical workflow that used both knobs on the same exit.

How the trailing stop was placed

A Trailing stop still exits when price moves against the position, but unlike a typical fixed Stop-loss order its exit level is reset as the trade develops instead of remaining at the first placed price.

One placement rule sets the next-bar stop between the original baseline Stop-loss order and the trade's maximum favorable excursion, using a chosen share of that gap.

In the tested design the Trailing stop also served as the opening money-management Stop-loss order: it began at the initial loss bound and then tightened as it followed price.

A grid that held trade count fixed

Each position was closed by the first of two bounds: the Trailing stop being hit, or a hold longer than four days forcing an exit on the next open.

If more than one order could have filled on the same bar, the simulator recorded the least favorable fill.

The grid used initial Stop-loss order amounts of 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 with trail factors of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70, where a factor of 0 leaves a fixed Stop-loss order.

Because every trade was forced out by the four-day cap, every stop-and-factor pair produced the same trade count, so outcome differences came from stop placement rather than from adding or dropping trades.

Drawdown referred to entry

Each pairing was scored by result and by maximum drawdown referred to entry, treating the trail as a Drawdown limit control as well as an exit.

What the pairings recorded

On the random-entry grid, a 500 baseline Stop-loss order with a 20 percent trail was the pairing singled out as best overall, and recorded drawdown at that pairing was 20675 versus 22200 when the same stop did not trail.

On the countertrend grid, adding a 10 percent trail to a 2000 baseline Stop-loss order cut recorded drawdown from 32525 to 25225. The four-day hold was described as likely limiting how far a trail could follow an extended move.
