Delta hedging as context, not cover
A letter writer asked whether an options overlay presented as a hedge actually reduced portfolio risk once remaining long-stock exposure was included. The reply treated net delta as a reading against the rest of the book, not as proof that market exposure had been removed.
- An options overlay presented as a hedge still has to be judged after remaining long-stock exposure is included.
- Net delta should be read against the rest of the book. It is not proof that market exposure has been removed.
- Position-level delta can show an options structure remaining net long even when individual legs look offsetting.
- Editorial view: treat Delta hedging as a portfolio-context check, not as a stand-alone cover.
A hedge that still left stock exposure
A letter writer asked whether an options overlay presented as a hedge actually reduced portfolio risk once the remaining long-stock exposure was included.
The reply did not treat the overlay as proof that market exposure had been removed. It treated the overlay as a position whose net delta should be read against the rest of the book.
Offsetting legs can still be net long
Position-level delta figures were used to show that an options structure can remain net long even when individual legs look offsetting.
That net figure belongs with the rest of the book. Legs that look offsetting can still leave the overlay, and the remaining long-stock exposure, net long.
