US warns 35 countries against joining rival AI initiative

Reuters reports the US State Department has told signatories of a June AI statement that joining a competing initiative would cut them off from the Pax Silica coalition.

The US State Department has prepared a letter for 35 countries that signed a joint statement in June on AI opportunities, Reuters reports. The letter says participation in a competing initiative would close off access to the Pax Silica coalition.

The text argues that signing the Pax Silica Declaration is a commitment, not a formality: "Being part of everything means being part of nothing." Partners were urged to make an informed choice and were told that cooperation is incompatible with projects whose goals contradict American objectives.
