US Presses Canada to Drop Retaliatory Measures Before Tariff Deadline

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada must remove its retaliatory measures against American products to avoid further tariffs. U.S. officials also want Canadian provinces to reverse restrictions on American alcohol sales and address concerns over dairy sector protections and government procurement rules.

Negotiations are continuing ahead of the August 19 deadline, when Washington has said it could impose 50% tariffs on another $20 billion of Canadian imports. Greer called the talks constructive but warned the U.S. would respond to any Canadian retaliation.

Canadian officials remain in Washington seeking a compromise, though the threat of new tariffs is keeping uncertainty elevated for businesses and cross-border trade.
