Turkmenistan Hosts 7 of 12 Largest Methane-Emitting Oil and Gas Sites
UN satellite data identifies Turkmenistan as home to 7 of the 12 largest methane-emitting oil and gas sources, linked to roughly 236,750 tonnes of annual emissions.
Satellite monitoring cited by the United Nations points to Turkmenistan as a major hotspot for oil- and gas-related methane emissions. The country accounts for seven of the twelve largest emitting sources identified from space, with annual emissions of approximately 236,750 tonnes.
According to UNEP, the largest methane releases can often be addressed through repairs and operational changes rather than requiring broader structural fixes. Targeting these major sources could offer significant emissions-reduction potential.
