Trump Orders US Navy to Return to Steam Catapults on Future Ford-Class Carriers

President Trump has directed the US Navy to abandon the electromagnetic launch system on future Ford-class aircraft carriers and return to steam catapults, starting with the fourth ship, according to WSJ.

President Trump has ordered the US Navy to switch future Ford-class aircraft carriers back to steam catapults, dropping the newer electromagnetic launch system. The change would begin with the fourth carrier, the USS Doris Miller, while the first three Ford-class ships would keep their electromagnetic systems.

Navy and industry leaders have resisted the idea for years because redesigning the ships is expected to cost billions of dollars.

The decision reverses course on a key technology used on the Navy\'s newest carrier class, according to WSJ.
