Japan Flow Data: Domestic Buyers Boost Foreign Assets, Foreigners Sell Japanese Securities

Weekly flow data show Japanese investors bought ¥963.5 billion of foreign stocks and ¥1,629.4 billion of foreign bonds, while foreign investors sold Japanese equities and bonds.

Japan’s latest cross-border investment data showed a sharp increase in local demand for foreign assets. Japanese investors bought ¥963.5 billion of foreign stocks after selling ¥276.4 billion the previous week. They also bought ¥1,629.4 billion of foreign bonds, up from ¥477.9 billion in the prior period.

Meanwhile, foreign investors were net sellers of Japanese securities. They sold ¥368.5 billion of Japanese stocks and ¥58.7 billion of Japanese bonds. That bond selling followed a ¥558.9 billion purchase the week before.

The figures highlight a rotation by domestic investors toward overseas markets while foreign participants reduced exposure to Japanese assets.
