Hawaiian Electric gets PUC nod for renewable and storage RFP
Hawaii’s largest utility secured regulatory approval for a key grid planning solicitation focused on renewables and storage, alongside plans for a broader all-fuels request later.
Hawaiian Electric announced that the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved its integrated grid planning request for proposals targeting renewable energy and storage resources. The approval is part of a broader strategy to retire older power plants sooner and replace them with modern firm generation capacity.
The utility also plans to launch an all-fuels RFP by the end of 2026, which will include liquid and gaseous fuel options. The integrated grid planning RFP is expected to accelerate Hawaii’s clean energy transition while maintaining grid reliability.
