Event-week straddle and strangle construction with residual delta

A long overlay is built by buying a call and a put that share an expiration. The strikes are either matched or split, implied volatility can fall after a scheduled report, and residual delta is read so the overlay can be seated in a broader book.

  • A long straddle buys a call and a put with the same strike and expiration. A long strangle keeps that expiration and splits the strikes, such as a 50-strike call with a 45-strike put around a 47.50 underlying.
  • Either overlay needs one side to cover the combined premium. If the underlying fails to move, time decay, commissions, and slippage can produce a loss.
  • Implied volatility often rises into a scheduled report and can fall afterward, so a long overlay can lose value even after a sizable move, especially when the premium already prices a large move.
  • Residual delta is the net projected change for the next one-point move. Calls add positive delta and puts add negative delta, and that net can be offset when the overlay is seated in a broader book.

Two constructions that share an expiration

A long straddle is constructed by buying a call and a put on the same underlying with the same strike and the same expiration.

A long strangle uses the same expiration but different strikes. Around a 47.50 underlying, that construction can pair a 50-strike call with a 45-strike put, whereas a straddle would buy both options at the 47.5 strike.

What the overlay still has to cover

Either overlay needs one side to appreciate enough to cover the combined premium. If the underlying fails to move, time decay plus commissions and slippage can produce a loss.

Implied volatility into and after a scheduled report

Implied volatility often rises into a scheduled report and can fall sharply afterward, so long options can lose value even when the underlying makes a sizable move.

If implied volatility is already elevated before the event, the options may already be priced for a large move, which raises exposure to a post-event volatility crush.

Residual delta as a one-point projection

Delta estimates the projected change in an option's value for a one-point move in the underlying. A 0.60 call delta implies a 60-cent gain on the next point higher, while a -0.45 put delta implies a 45-cent loss on that same point higher.

Because calls carry positive delta and puts carry negative delta, the net delta of a straddle or strangle can be read and offset when seating the overlay in a broader book. That projection also depends on strike, remaining time, and volatility, so it is not a universal conversion chart.

20071-1 pp.Next on Options strangleStraddle versus strangle construction and a debit-spread cash auditA long straddle buys a same-expiry put and call that share one strike, usually at or near the stock. A long strangle uses different strikes so the call sits above the stock and the put sits below it, and both contracts are out of the money.
