The midpoint retest after a missed breakaway gap

A breakaway gap is a daily-chart discontinuity that leaves price beyond a prior support or resistance area. When the first breakout is missed, the historical workflow rests an open order near the center of the remaining gap and treats a complete fill-through as the clean invalidation.

  • A breakaway gap is a daily-chart discontinuity that leaves price beyond prior support or resistance after accumulation or distribution, and it is read as the start of a new trend when volume expands on the break.
  • Gap-analysis treats the unfilled opening interval as evidence of order imbalance and as a later test zone, rather than as a one-bar curiosity.
  • When the first breakout is missed, the recorded gap-trading step is to rest an open order near the gap midpoint and allow a one-to-ten-day window for a midpoint-retest.
  • A protective stop sits just beyond the price that would completely fill the gap. Gap-fill plus continuation is treated as failure of the breakaway hypothesis.

What the breakaway leaves behind

A breakaway gap is a daily-chart discontinuity that leaves price beyond a prior support or resistance area after accumulation or distribution. It is typically read as the start of a new trend when volume expands on the break. Volume-confirmation belongs to the qualifying read of a true breakaway.

An upward gap is associated with insufficient sell orders or a surge of buy interest. A downward gap is associated with insufficient buy orders or a surge of sell interest. Gap-analysis reads that unfilled opening interval as evidence of order imbalance and as a later test zone, rather than as a one-bar curiosity.

The midpoint order after a missed break

When the first breakout is missed, the stated procedure is to rest an open order near the center of the remaining gap. That midpoint-retest is expected often within a week to 10 days. Price typically enters the interval, reverses, and then continues in the original breakout direction.

A protective stop is placed just beyond the price that would completely fill the gap. Gap-fill is price travel that occupies the whole vacant interval. If the gap fills and price keeps moving that way, the procedure exits. Complete fill plus continuation is treated as failure of the breakaway hypothesis.

Sugar after the June breakaway

The October 1989 sugar contract left a gap between 11.45 and 11.59 on 8 June 1989. The next session opened at 11.83, traded down to 11.48 inside that gap, and closed at 11.65.

After that contract later reached 13.07 and gapped again on 22 June 1989, price pulled back into the newer gap two days later.

December corn and a resting order

On 14 June, December 1989 corn opened three cents higher and closed eight and a half cents higher. A working order in that gap is recorded as filling nine days later at 240 or better.

A later decline left a gap between 248 and 238-3/4. Two days afterward, price pulled back up into that interval.

What the examples can and cannot show

The recorded cases describe the historical workflow. The sugar sessions show price entering a remaining gap after the break, then later repeating a pullback into a newer gap. The corn sessions show a resting midpoint order filling inside the stated window, and a later downward gap attracting a pullback into the vacant interval.

Editorial note: these cases illustrate sequence, not frequency. They do not show what happens after every midpoint fill, and they do not establish a present-day rule.

Educational research material, not investment advice. Historical source context does not establish present-day performance.
