USD/JPY Holds Near 160 Resistance Amid Oil Prices and Rate Spreads

Brown Brothers Harriman notes that USD/JPY has recovered half of its post-intervention decline, but narrowing US-Japan rate spreads and oil prices keep the pair near the 160 resistance level.

The USD/JPY pair trades near the psychological 160 resistance, according to Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH). Elias Haddad from BBH notes that the exchange rate has recovered approximately 50% of the losses seen after Japan’s suspected currency intervention.

The recovery is partly driven by sustained oil prices, which increase dollar demand from energy importers. However, narrowing interest rate differentials between the US and Japan are providing some support for the yen.

The pair remains capped below 160 as these opposing forces play out, with the rate spread narrowing favoring the Japanese currency.
