US Unemployment Rate Drops as Labor Force Continues Shrinking

The US labor force contracted by 264,000 in July, with over 2.1 million workers exiting since November, causing the headline unemployment rate to decline.

The US labor force contracted by 264,000 individuals in July, according to new data. Since November, more than 2.1 million workers have left the labor force entirely.

This decline in participation has mechanically pushed the unemployment rate lower, as those no longer actively seeking work are not counted as unemployed. The falling jobless rate may therefore mask underlying weakness rather than signal genuine labor market strength.
