US Household Equity Holdings Hit Record $74 Trillion

US household equity holdings have surged to an all-time high of $74 trillion, up $48 trillion since 2020, with the equity-to-GDP ratio also reaching a record 232%.

US household equity holdings reached a record $74 trillion, marking a $48 trillion jump since 2020—a 185% increase. At the start of the century, the figure stood at just $13 trillion.

As a share of GDP, equity ownership hit an all-time high of about 232%, more than tripling since the 2008 financial crisis. The ratio handily exceeds the roughly 140% peak during the 2000 dot-com bubble.

The data underscores the growing concentration of wealth among asset owners, with equities comprising an ever-larger portion of household balance sheets.
